Born in Flint, Michigan on September 7, 1977, Cleaves is known for his position as point guard in the National Basketball Association. Cleaves was drafted to the Detroit Pistons in 2000 as Round 1, fourteenth pick overall. He played for the Pistons from 2000 to 2001, followed by the Sacramento Kings from 2001 to 2003, Huntsville Flight (D-League) fro m 2003 to 2004, the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2004, Seattle SuperSonics form 2004 to 2006, the Fayetteville Patriots (D-League) in 2006, UNICS Kazan (Russia) from 2006 to 2007, Bakersfield Jam (D-League) in 2007, Panionos (Greece) from 2007 to 2008, and lastly Bakersfield Jam (D-League) from 2008 to 2009.
